Wildwood middle and upper school students earned honors at the two annual festivals sponsored by the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California (DTASC) this fall.
The upper school competition was held in October. Wildwood’s team of 34 students claimed two 3rd place trophies and four honorable mentions in a competition that pitted them against more than 2,000 students from 68 public and independent high schools.
The middle school competition followed in November. This was Wildwood’s fourth year to compete in the middle school festival, with 20 students participating. The team, which was co-directed by senior Alyssa R., earned trophies for 3rd place, 4th place, and 5th place, and also brought home three honorable mentions.
The festivals feature eight categories. At the upper school festival, Wildwood students performed in each of them. The team made semi-finals in seven categories, and advanced to the finals in four. Wildwood’s upper school award winners were:
• 3rd place in “AFI top 100,” in which schools performed a scene from a classic Hollywood movie. Wildwood’s team of Lucas L., Chiara R., Emilie P., and John B., won for their scene from Annie Hall.
• 3rd place monologue went to Johnny M.
• Honorable mention for best school overall, putting Wildwood in the top 10 of the participating schools.
• Honorable mention for monologue went to Mellie G.
• Honorable mention for “theater for social change,” which went to Jared K. and Stephanie M.
• Honorable mention for set design and lighting, which went to Maddie T., Noah U., and Steven W.
At the middle school festival, Wildwood students competed against 39 other schools in seven categories, earning their way to final rounds in all seven. The winners were:
• 3rd place for group drama went to Melissa L., Maddie B., and Laurel R-L.
• 4th place for a piece by an Irish playwright went to Maggie N. and Samantha C.
• 5th place for their scene from The Sixth Sense went to Abby L., Maddy G., and Molly S.
• Honorable mention for best school overall
• Honorable mention for tech design went to Dylan F., Jacob M., and Sara S.
• Honorable mention in the category of “theater for social change” when to Somerset T., Evan B., and Morgan V.
