Wildwood’s Young Editorial Writers Hit the Press
Sarah Simon’s 5th graders are an opinionated bunch. They have strong feelings about the homeless, the environment, bullying, and athletes’ abuse of steroids. So Sarah had them vent—in the form of written editorials that they then sent to publications around the country. So far, seven students have seen their letters printed: six in The Argonaut, a local West Los Angeles paper, and one in the Los Angeles Times.
“Each student chose a subject they were passionate about,” explained Sarah. “We talked about persuasive writing, studied op/ed pages, and looked at audiences of different publications to see where their letters would be a good fit.”
Students sent letters to publications as diverse as National Geographic and the New York Times. Feedback from editors has been great, Simon said. “Some of the editors assumed the writers were high school students!”
Wildwood School, founded in 1971, provides a strong academic program in a non-competitive environment in which students learn from each other as well as from their teachers. The Wildwood School experience helps students develop an appreciation for individual and group differences, a desire to contribute to the welfare of a diverse community, and the ability to adapt and lead in an ever-changing world.
