Academic Philosophy

Wildwood’s academic program encompasses the core subjects of humanities (language arts and social studies), mathematics, science, Spanish, performing and visual arts, and physical education. Students acquire information through an integrated curriculum that uses curricular themes to connect academic disciplines in meaningful contexts. The project-based program encourages learning by doing rather than by rote memorization, and students demonstrate what they know by presenting their work.

The academic curriculum spirals throughout the K-12 years, introducing and reinforcing, in a developmentally appropriate manner, core skills and concepts, including writing, reading, use and understanding of English and Spanish, mathematical computation, scientific thinking, creative expression, and physical health. This is accomplished through a daily block schedule that allows time for the in-depth exploration of subjects and ideas.

Out-of-school experiences such as field trips, outdoor education, and community involvement enrich the academic curriculum and give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Wildwood uses narrative assessments rather than letter grades to give students and their families a clear and rich understanding of student progress in each academic subject.
