College Counseling
Wildwood School’s college counseling program follows the philosophy of the school. Because the school environment is small and personalized, our two full-time directors of College Counseling is able to see students daily and assist each student in selecting the college or university that is the right fit for him or her. Beginning in Division Three (ninth and tenth grades), the director works with individual students and their families to help guide them through the maze of college selection and admissions. Senior Institute students (eleventh and twelfth grades) meet with the director on a regular basis to review course work and to plan for future challenging academic and extracurricular opportunities.
The University of California has approved all of Wildwood’s college preparatory secondary course work. In addition, students are encouraged to pursue honors credits in appropriate classes and to take classes at community colleges and other local colleges. Both Wildwood and competitive colleges feel that this is better preparation for university work than the more traditional Advanced Placement courses taken in high school.
Although Wildwood does not give letter grades, a system is in place to convert a student’s narrative assessments into a GPA for those colleges and universities that require it. Wildwood’s program does not emphasize testing. However, we realize that standardized exams for college entrance are a reality, and all students in tenth and eleventh grades take the PSAT. In addition, test preparation courses in the PSAT, SAT, and ACT are offered at Wildwood.
We are proactive in introducing our Wildwood philosophy to colleges and universities in all parts of the country, and the Senior Institute students enjoy meeting with college admissions officers on a regular basis. During the 2006–2007 school year, more than 100 colleges will have visited our campus. Students have visited number of local colleges and will have the opportunity to visit colleges in the Northeast during our Spring Break.
Wildwood is a member of the College Board, The Western Association for College Admission Counseling, and the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
