Kwame Alexander Visits Wildwood

Author and poet Kwame Alexander visited the Wildwood elementary campus for our first in-person author visit in two years! Students from 3rd-5th grade were eager to hear Kwame recite poetry and answer their burning questions. When asked “What is your least favorite poem you’ve written?” he admitted it was the first time he’d encountered the question on his school visits.

Kwame is the recipient of numerous accolades and is the New York Times Bestselling author of 36 books, including The Crossover. Recalling how this Newberry medal-winning book took many iterations and harsh rejections before ultimately being published, Kwame led students in a chorus of this inspirational mantra:

“Dribble, fake, shoot, miss,
dribble, fake, shoot, miss,
dribble, fake, shoot, miss,
dribble, fake, shoot, swish”

Before departing, Kwame challenged a handful of students and then teachers in a fill-in-the-blank contest to finish a stanza of one of his poems. Thank you for visiting and pumping everyone up, Kwame!
