A Day at the Beach (With a Purpose)

A Day at the Beach (With a Purpose)

It’s not just a day at the beach for Wildwood 7th graders, who truly embodied the Habits of Mind and Heart on a recent community-building trip to the beach with the goal of “Leave it better than we found it.”

Before departing, students watched and discussed a documentary about plastic pollution in the oceans in their Advisories. Turning information into action, students were prepared to clean up the beach as soon as they hit the sand (with gloves on, of course). Students collected data along with pieces of trash, using “Cleanup Data Cards” that help the nonprofit Heal the Bay in their education and advocacy efforts to keep waterways in Southern California clean.

After a debrief about the clean-up experience, Advisory groups took restorative beachside walks to enjoy the natural environment they’d help care for. The learning and sharing didn’t end there—after they returned to campus they learned about current local legislation and shared what steps they might want to take on their own to continue this important work.
