Community Connections and Playful Beginnings to a Year of Celebration

Community Connections and Playful Beginnings to a Year of Celebration

Inspired by Wildwood’s beloved Day of Play for elementary students, Grown-Ups’ Day of Play invited Wildwood parents and guardians to rediscover the joy of curiosity, creativity, and connection—this time, across the playground that is our city, Los Angeles.

“Just like Day of Play at elementary, where students have the opportunity to learn and build friendships on their own, Grown Ups’ Day of Play was envisioned as a way to foster a similar experience for Wildwood adults," said Shilpa Vuthoori (P. ‘34, ‘38) who, along with other parent volunteers, organized the event. "Our goal was to mirror that experience to foster more connection and community across the families of Wildwood."

Coinciding with Wildwood’s 25th anniversary as a K-12 school, the event was a fitting—and fun—way to kick off a year of "25 for 25" celebrations to mark the milestone, while potentially sparking a new Wildwood tradition of its own. Over the course of the day, more than 150 community members participated in 16 different Grown-Ups’ Day of Play events across the city.

"It really filled my Grown-Up 'bucket' of fun and community, said Ellen Beuting (P. ‘33, ‘37), who participated in several of the events, "and looking around all day I saw the same joyful smiles on everyone else's faces, too. Plus, I’ve legitimately been putting my new skills to use!"

From a morning hike with Head of School Landis Green to hands-on experiences like flower arranging with Viola Floral, charcuterie board building, tamal making with Chef Ray Garcia, and even a scavenger hunt at The Getty, the day offered something for everyone. With sound baths, art workshops, yoga, and mixology classes rounding out the lineup, participants explored, learned, and laughed together in true Wildwood fashion.

"Every single event included people who had never met each other before, with parents from both elementary and middle/upper who wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to meet," Shilpa added. “It was also a great opportunity for others to reconnect and strengthen old friendships. It was truly a special experience.”

A number of the offerings were facilitated and hosted by small businesses (and in particular, women of color-owned businesses), deepening Wildwood’s connection to our greater community.

Over the coming year, "25 for 25" will feature a host of events and experiences designed to celebrate our community, our growth, and the spirit of Wildwood that continues to inspire students and families alike. As the first in the series, Grown-Ups’ Day of Play set the tone for what’s to come—an invitation to engage, connect, and celebrate the joy that defines Wildwood. It also proved that play isn’t just for kids—it’s for all of us!
