Wildwood advanced biology students were honored to display two of their pieces at the Craft Contemporary exhibit, titled "Material Acts: Experimentation in Architecture and Design." The exhibit at the Craft Contemporary is part of PST ART, the next evolution of the Getty’s citywide art event Pacific Standard Time. Upper school science teacher and Wildwood REAP grant recipient Ann Marie Macara coordinated the submissions by Wildwood students Annabel S. ‘25, Oliver O. ‘25 and alumni Keela B. ‘24, Olivia D. ‘24, Milla C. ‘24, and Reiland B. ‘24.
The art pieces students created were part of their "bioart" advanced biology lesson. Ann Marie often incorporates mycology (the study of mushrooms) and “bioart” into their classroom projects. During their microbial leather project, students learned how to forage, treat, and repurpose mushrooms into mushroom leather and mushroom paper. These projects show the potential for various mushrooms to be used as a natural leather alternative and as a functional and biodegradable medium for paper crafts.
